Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim country and one of the world’s newest democracies. The nation is often seen as an example that democracy and Islam can coexist. In the Muslim world Indonesia is unique. The nation has a long tradition of a tolerant form of Islam. Can its democracy survive the pressures of a rise in more fundamentalist ideology?
