Ian Murphy

Ian Murphy is joining the World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads Board of Directors with a wealth of expertise. He is a China Subject Matter expert at SecuriFense Inc., where he provides insight to organizations on China's economy and foreign policy. He is currently pursuing a PhD in International Studies at Old Dominion University. Ian has made scholarly contributions in China and Russian affairs, with contributions to publications such as the Journal of Advanced Military Studies, Small Wars Journal, and Inter Populum Journal of Irregular Warfare and Special Operations. Ian's research covers pressing geopolitical issues, including China's strategic dominance in rare earth minerals, its hybrid warfare strategies against Taiwan, the China-Russia relationship, and broader Indo-Pacific security dynamics. With a well-rounded background in national security and international business, Ian's expertise brings a deeper understanding to global challenges and to the World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads. He previously earned an MA in National Security Studies from American Military University and a Global MBA from National Taiwan Normal University.
